Tooth replacements using implantation techniques are better than other methods of dental restoration. Implants are stronger and more durable than dentures or bridges that are the most common dental restorative options that dentists advise to their patients. Successful teeth implantations also appear more natural and can be barely distinguished from the remaining original teeth. An implant is not susceptible to cavities. Likewise, it is more permanent and can be combined with other teeth restoration methods like a crown or dental bridge in order to provide added stability and reduce irritation of the gum tissue.
For the dental implants to be successful, a period called osseointegration has to take place between the living bone and the implantation. Simply put, this is the healing period for the structural connection of the implant to the bone. This healing process will take between three to six months, after which additional dental work may already follow, such as placing the crown or artificial prosthesis. Implantation requires drilling a hole in the jawbone, hence, the necessity for to wait for complete healing to take place. After his period, the implant which is usually made of titanium should also be securely anchored to the bone. Naturally, without osseointegration an implant fails.
Nevertheless, the batting average of qualified prosthodontists is good. Studies show that the five-year success rate for implants for the lower jaw at 95 percent, and 90 percent for the lower jaw. The success rate for the upper jaw is a bit lower because it is less dense compared to the upper jaw, leading to a potentially more difficult osseointegration.
Other causes of failure of dental implants may hinge on the expertise of the prosthodontist. Bear in mind that a hole must be skillfully drilled in the jawbone for an implant. A poorly positioned implant could result in the failure of the crucial osseointegration to take place. Hence, it is very important to choose the prosthodontist not only with the academic training but also with ample experience as well.
